# Day 1: Watching not Assuming

One of the strongest pillars of the pre-tribulation rapture teaching is imminency. This means many Christians believe Jesus could return at any moment, with no signs needing to happen first.I agree this sounds comforting, It creates a sense of urgency and excitement. 

It makes us feel secure and gives hope that we’ll escape the tribulation. However my question is: Does the full council of scripture support this? or are we reading certain passages through the lens of tradition instead of the Holy Spirit? Let’s look at Matthew 24, Jesus told His disciples that a few things must happen before He gathers His elect: 

**(1)** “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14) 

**(2)** “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.” (Matthew 24:21) 

(3) “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 

Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”(Matthew 24:29–31) 

Though we don’t know the exact day or hour, these passages clearly points to signs that must precede His coming. It does not support the idea that Christ could return at any random moment without warning. Paul also emphasizes this in 2 Thessalonians: “Let no one “DECEIVE you by any means”; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition (AntiChrist).” (2 Thessalonians 2:3–4)

So what about passages like 1 Thessalonians 5, which say: “For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night.” (1 Thessalonians 5:2) To this I say just keep reading let’s get the full context: “But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all children of light and children of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.” (1 Thessalonians 5:4–5) 

Now many Christians often link 1 Thessalonians 5:2 to imminency, saying “it will come like a thief in the night.” But let’s analyze this, notice being caught like a thief in the night does not mean the Tribulation period is bypassed. 

Nor does it mean every believer will automatically be removed beforehand. Again see 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 The warning actually parallels the story of Noah: Noah and his family were warned in advance. The flood came suddenly, like a thief in the night, to those who weren’t prepared. 

Only Noah’s righteous family was saved (Genesis 6–7). Jesus references this in (Matthew 24:37–39): “But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.” Preparation matters. 

Scripture teaches expectancy we are to be watchful and ready but it does not teach imminency in the sense that Christ could return at any random, completely signless moment. Day 1 closing: Jesus warned us that the deception in the last days will be so great that, if it were possible, even the elect, the saints of God would be deceived. He also said that unless those days were shortened, no one would survive. 

It’s going to be really hard, extremely difficult, It’s going to be tough. But you must be willing to endure even unto death. Paul reminds all true believers this day will not overtake us like a thief, because we are not children of darkness but of the light. We know to watch. We know how to look. And Jesus gave us the example of the fig tree when it puts forth leaves, you know summer is near. He has not left us without signs. He has not left us ignorant. Stay tuned for day 2
